Romania. Unemployment is more than 60% and the average
wage is around $4.00 a day. Romania became free of oppressive
communist rule in 1989. The people of Romania are poorly equipped
to compete in the 21st Century. They are, however, quite resourceful
and only want a chance. They are hard-working and very appreciative
of the help they are receiving. They love the United States
and the American people.
For the last 4 years we have been building the "Home of Hope". This
project is to benefit a charity called the Evergreen Foundation.
We wanted a cause that would benefit both housing and children in someway. This project does just that - building orphanages for kids in Romania. These "orphanages" are not institutions as you may think, but
instead, homes filled with love and encouragement where these young people can grow and prosper. The kids I met in these orphanages were the best-behaved and most loving kids I have met in my life.
Maybe, one day, one of these kids will be the leader that will help their country get back on its feet. To contribute to the cause, we have for the past 3 years built a home (called the "Home of Hope") and donated all the profits to the Evergreen Foundation.
In the past decade, Elite Homes and our team members have built 13 homes to benefit specific causes: five homes for Channel 15, two home for Habitat for Humanity, three for the Family Place, and three for The Evergreen Foundation.. Together, we have provided more than $700,000 in donations to these organizations.
Over the summer of 2002, Joe traveled to Romania and spent 8 days there to better understand the needs of the children. |
