| Kids from Utica Elementary School presenting a $1000 check today to Rocky Pusateri for the Hughes family. |
Here are few more stories that you probably
have not heard about.
Rocky told me the story of Utica Elementary School in
Southern Indiana who called one day and said they had
a donation for the Hughes family. They showed up on a
school bus on Tuesday and presented a $1000 check to
Rocky. Wow, that’s some caring kids.
Dale was amazed that some companies (White Castle,
Havana Beverages) asked us if they could donate to the
project without ever being called. Eventually we had to
turn down offers from several companies because we
had all that we needed.
Sandy told me about how she saw volunteers show up
at the check-in tent and wait up to 8 hours for a chance
to volunteer on the site.
Kathie talked about the phones ringing off the hook at
our office. Every day during the build, all 8 phone lines
in our office stayed lit almost constantly. She remembered,
“People were calling mostly to find out how they
could volunteer, or they were just saying thanks. Two people cried on the phone because they were overcome
with emotion. It was fun, no matter how busy it got”.
She remembers one day Joe leaving the office to go
back to the site saying, “I’m going back to the site. It’s
less stressful out there”.
Carlene spoke about many past Elite Homes employees
helping out: Regan Byrnes, Barry Wilson, Tom Kruse,
Rick Allison, Todd Osbourne, Toby Wright and Jason
Wright were all there on site lending a hand.
Andy told me, “When I was working out there, I tried to
notice some little things that maybe everyone wouldn’t
notice. For one example, there are some workers who
normally would not want to work side by side with some
of the other trades. I saw these same workers all working
in the same room, helping each other and having fun”.
Mike Osbourne remembered getting hamburgers and
handing them up to carpenters on the roof and bricklayers
on scaffolding, because they refused to stop working
to eat.
Then there is the story of our own Chris Grosskopf on
the day after we were done. He was on site loading up
some leftover materials, and got in his truck for a minute.
3 hours later he woke up. Do you think he was a
little exhausted? |
