Watering Your Trees

In the dry months of the spring and summer, it is extremely important to water your trees and shrubs, especially new plantings that come with your new home.

• For newly planted trees, water the original root ball area and just beyond this area. If there is a built-up mulched area around the tree, set a slow trickling hose near the tree trunk and let the water run down into the mulch area. A sprinkler will not be effective in watering a tree.

• Water deeply rather than frequently. For newly planted trees in the dry months of the year, you need to water once every 7-10 days. Let the water run for 30 to 45 minutes per tree. If the water starts to pool and run off, stop watering, let it soak in, and start again later.

• For established trees (3-4 years old or more), water around the canopy of the tree rather than the root ball area. Established trees can be watered less frequently.

• For shrubs, you also need to water them every 7-10 days. You can just give shrubs a minute of water from a hose per shrub.

• If a tree or shrub has leaves that are curling or turning brown at the tips of the branches, this is a sign that it is not getting enough water.

• Remember, it is your responsibility to water your trees and shrubs to prevent them from dying!
